The Book ?

Yes, there will be a book.

I can say that with more confidence than I could a few months ago, because the work is already underway and gathering its own momentum. The approach I've settled into is simple: write at least one paragraph between dives. It doesn't sound like much, but it adds up faster than you'd expect, and more importantly it keeps the writing close to the thing that feeds it. I've found that inspiration arrives much more readily when I'm still carrying the experience, still feeling the cold, still replaying what I saw, than when I'm sitting at a desk days later trying to reconstruct it from memory.

What I'm building is a collection of diving memories, pulled from more than twenty years of being underwater in places that left a mark. The challenge isn't finding material, it's organising it into something that has shape and direction rather than just chronology. So that's the work: sorting through the encounters, the locations, the moments of genuine awe and occasional genuine fear, and finding the order that makes the most sense of them. Not necessarily the order they happened, but the order that tells the story properly.

It's an evolving thing, and I mean that in the best possible sense. Every dive adds a new piece to the puzzle, and the puzzle is far from complete. I'm not entirely sure what the final picture looks like yet, which is part of what makes the process interesting. What I do know is that each paragraph written is another piece placed, and the image is slowly becoming clearer.

If you're curious about where it ends up, stay close, I'll be sharing pieces of it here as it takes shape.
